Emiko KASAHARA [ART de NIGHT part 1. / PARASOPHIA: Kyoto International Art Festival]

What makes me truly sad since I returned from New York after 15 years is the lack of a place where I can randomly talk about art and life with people. Because of the large size of Tokyo we don’t have time to get together. Or Japanese people are so shy that they don’t speak up much about what they think. There must be some reason to understand but it doesn’t help my feeling of boredom.
I come to organize ART de NIGHT to obtain a casual occasion to get together, eat, drink together and to talk together about art, culture and politics. I will pick a topic each time to start the conversation with but we can freely shuffle any themes. This time the topic is PARASOPHIA: Kyoto International Art Festival, the exhibition many international artists are participating in including me. I’m going to express my observations but also expect your participations, opinions, and questions. This is not a one-way school class where one provides and other receives but it is a place where we have equal positions to talk with each other. Let’s share time together and make our everyday life link to art.
I’ll provide information about PARASOPHIA. Your spontaneous research or visiting the show would be appreciated.

Kasahara’s early works examined relationships between women and society with a focus on the body. In recent years she conducts field research and produce installations that point up the ambiguity of culturally defined systems such as gender, religion, nationality, and language by using a wide range of techniques and methods: sculptures, photographs, videos, performances and drawings. Her work has internationally exhibited at many venues includes PARASOFIA (2015), Yokohama Triennale (2014), Sydney Biennale (2004), Kwangju Biennale (2000) and solo exhibitions in both Japan and the US.
